Common questions

Answers without a ticket.

Where are my records stored?

Customers, devices, tests, and signatures are stored in the app's local container on your iPhone. Backflow Log has no account system and no developer-run server, and it does not sync to a cloud service.

Does it work with no cell signal?

Yes. Everything — recording tests, computing pass/fail, generating the report PDF — happens on the device. You only need connectivity when you actually email or share a report.

Which assemblies does it cover?

Reduced pressure assemblies (RP, RPDA), double check assemblies (DC, DCDA), and vacuum breakers (PVB, SVB). The test form shows only the readings that apply to the selected type.

How is pass/fail decided?

The app checks the readings you enter: each DC check holds at least 1.0 psid closed tight; an RP's first check holds at least 5.0 psid with the relief valve opening at 2.0 psid or higher; a vacuum breaker's air inlet opens at 1.0 psid or higher with the check holding 1.0 psid. It also checks the applicable leak and valve observations. The calculated result does not replace the complete test procedure required by your certification and water system.

Is the PDF the official MassDEP form?

No. It is a Massachusetts-style inspection report, and it does not include every field on the official form. Confirm the required fields, signatures, format, and submission method with each water system before relying on it for filing. The app does not generate the separate repair and retest form. MassDEP provides the official inspection form and repair and retest form.

How do I get a report to the water department?

Open the test, generate the report, and use the share button — email it, save it to Files, or send it however that town prefers. Backflow Log does not file reports automatically and does not submit to third-party portals.

How does retest scheduling work?

Each device's next test date comes from its most recent passing test and its interval — semiannual for RP and annual for DC by default, with a per-device override for the schedule your water system requires, including seasonal service. A failed or unfinished test does not advance the schedule: the assembly stays on the dashboard until a test passes. Overdue and upcoming tests appear there, along with the 14-day repair-and-retest window after a failure.

Reminders are optional and off until you turn them on in My Info. When enabled, the app schedules local notifications on your device for a device coming due and the day it is due, failed-device retests, your certification expiry and gauge calibration, and a monthly nudge to export a backup. They are scheduled on the device from records you already entered — there is no server, and nothing is sent to us.

Can I move my records to a new iPhone?

Use Export Backup in My Info and save the file to a location you can access from the new phone, such as iCloud Drive. Verify the file is there before deleting the app or replacing the phone. It contains your tester profile, customers, devices, tests, signatures, and photos. Use Restore from Backup on the new phone to import it. Apple device backups may also include app data, depending on your backup settings; do not assume a backup succeeded without checking it.

Two things worth knowing about the backup file. Restoring replaces everything currently in the app rather than merging, and the app confirms what the file holds before it does. And the file is a complete, unencrypted copy of your business records — treat it the way you would treat the paper folder it replaces, and put it somewhere you control.

Do I need an account or subscription?

No account, no sign-in, no subscription, and no per-test or per-report fees. The app is available free on the App Store during early access. Early adopters keep the capabilities available to them now for free.

How do I delete my information?

Delete customers, devices, or individual tests inside the app. Deleting the app removes all of its local data from the device, subject to any Apple backups you keep.

Does Backflow Log tell me how to test or repair a device?

No. It records the test you perform and the results you enter. Test procedure comes from your certification training and the current regulations; repairs on domestic lines are a licensed plumber's work and on fire protection lines a licensed sprinkler fitter's.

Failed device?

Massachusetts regulations require failed or defective devices to be repaired or replaced and retested within 14 calendar days. Backflow Log's dashboard tracks that clock from the failed test's date, but the obligation — and notifying the water system — belongs to the tester and the facility. When in doubt, call the program coordinator.

Backflow Log is an independent recordkeeping tool. It is not affiliated with MassDEP, NEWWA, or any public water system.
